Maybe your dentist has suggested that it is time for your child to get braces. Or you may have decided that the time has come to straighten your teeth. Whatever the case, our dentists, Dr. Jorge Villasenor, Dr. Andy Kusumo, and Dr. Jorge De La Osa can work with you to help you or your child get the smile of a lifetime.

First, your dentist will give you a thorough exam, including x-rays, to get a clear picture of the alignment of your teeth and the position of your jaw. Based on that exam, you and your dentist can discuss which procedure, and which type of orthodontics will work best for you. You might benefit from traditional braces, or an alternative method such as Invisalign®. Traditional braces include brackets on the front of your teeth, brackets on the backs, or a metal band around your teeth.

If you decide to move ahead with braces, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your appointment. You should see our dentist for a cleaning before you get your braces. That will save some time on the day of your appointment. On the big day, brush and floss thoroughly before leaving for the dentist’s office.

After your braces are on, you should expect there to be some pain at first. Your dentist will give you dental wax to put on your braces if they are irritating your mouth, but if you have persistent pain, you should call the office. An over the counter pain reliever will also help. For the first few days, your mouth will be tender, so try eating soft foods. Before you get your braces, the dentist will talk with you about how to brush your teeth while you wear your orthodontics, and you will need to take some time to get used to your new brushing and flossing routine.
