Are you aware of how your dental health needs may change as you age? Are you looking for ways to take care of your oral health during this season of your life? We would like to help you by identifying a few common issues found in adults ages 55 and above and what can be done to help them.

Many people from this age group can experience dry mouth, which could be caused by certain medical disorders or as a side effect of medications. Dry mouth occurs when saliva production is reduced, and the soft tissues of the mouth can become irritated and susceptible to infection. Saliva also helps to naturally cleanse the mouth of food particles. If you have dry mouth on a regular basis, you could be at a higher risk for tooth decay.

You can try chewing on sugar-free gum or candy to help increase your saliva production. You could also drink more water to help moisturize your mouth. Our dentists may also recommend an oral rinse for you to use.

You should still get checked frequently by one of our dentists as you are not immune to dental decay and it can easily start under fillings that may be failing without your knowledge. Even if you aren’t experiencing any discomfort, a cavity could be forming and it’s better to take care of it sooner before it becomes a larger problem.
