Are you currently receiving orthodontic treatment? If so, it is very important to keep your teeth healthy and clean throughout the process. Orthodontists today strongly recommend properly caring and cleaning your teeth with a daily oral hygiene routine, which should include the following steps:

1. Prepare for your brush: Before you brush your teeth, make sure to remove any rubber bands or attachable objects from your braces.

2. Brush: Brush your teeth with a strong and efficient toothbrush, and do your best to scrub around the brackets, wires, and pins of your braces. Make sure to deeply clean each tooth, which is usually possible if you spend about 10 seconds cleaning each tooth.

3. Floss: Flossing with braces can sometimes be a bit difficult, which is why orthodontists generally provide floss threaders when you first begin your orthodontic process. While you floss, feed one end of the floss through the space between the wire and your tooth. Next, gently press the floss between your teeth. Then, rub each tooth with the floss and free any excess food and debris that may be stuck.

4. Rinse: When you finish brushing and flossing your teeth, rinse your mouth with bacteria-killing or fluoride mouthwash. Sip a small amount of rinse into your mouth and swish it around for about 40 seconds. When the time is up, spit the liquid into the sink.

Orthodontists today also strongly recommend avoiding the following foods while you are receiving orthodontic treatment:

• Apples
• Bagels
• Carrots
• Ice
• Bubble gum
• Caramel
• Pretzels
• Taffy
• Corn on the cob
• Hard-to-eat foods
• Sticky foods
